FAQs

Q: What is lye?

A: Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide, is an essential ingredient in soap making due to its role in the saponification process. When mixed with water and combined with fats and oils, like coconut oil and shea butter, lye initiates a chemical reaction that transforms these ingredients into soap and glycerin. This process ensures that no lye remains in the final product. The lye is completely used up and neutralized, leaving the soap safe, non-toxic, and vegan-friendly. After a curing period, where the soap hardens, it becomes gentle and suitable for use, devoid of any residual lye.
